Historical and Biographical Notes

A native of Tennessee, Austin Augustus King (D) came to Missouri in 1830 to form a law office in Columbia. He was a colonel of Missouri troops in the Black Hawk Indian War, in which he met then Captain Abraham Lincoln of the Illinois division. In 1837, King moved to near Richmond, Missouri, and became a circuit judge until his election as the tenth governor of Missouri in 1844. During his tenure, King pushed for higher education, helping to establish the "seed" of the University of Missouri in the form of Columbia College, and vetoed the fugitive slave law as being unconstitutional, even though he himself was a slave owner. A moderate, he favored compromise on the slavery question but when the civil war came, he decided for the Union and served in the US Congress during that turbulent time.
